This guy is a mantis shrimp, which receives its name because it physically resembles the terrestrial praying mantis and the shrimp. They sport powerful claws that they use to attack and kill prey by spearing, stunning or dismemberment. They are so strong that some larger species of mantis shrimp are capable of breaking through aquarium glass and have been nicknamed “sea locusts” by ancient Assyrians, and “thumb splitters” because of they can easily split our skin open with their claws.  Most species live in tropical and subtropical seas (Indian and Pacific Oceans between eastern Africa and Hawaii). Mantis shrimp appear in a variety of colors, ranging from shades of browns to bright neon colours.
